Memory screenings are a significant first step toward finding out if a person may have a memory problem. Memory problems are caused by a variety of conditions. A memory screening is not used to diagnose any particular illness and does not replace consultation with a physician or other qualified healthcare professional.

Does this memory screening provide a diagnosis?

Memory screenings are preliminary and basic. Emphasize to the individual and any accompanying parties that this is only a screening, not a diagnosis; a comprehensive assessment by a qualified healthcare professional is necessary to identify the cause of memory problems.

How accurate are memory screenings?

Memory screenings are helpful in detecting significant memory impairment, but they are not sensitive enough to detect minor problems or diagnose an illness. If an individual’s score on the screening indicates that there may be a memory problem, explain that additional assessment tools, such as a complete medical history, a physical exam, neuropsychological tests, lab tests and brain imaging scans, may be used by a physician to provide an accurate diagnosis.

What does the score mean?

Below threshold scores suggest the need for further assessment. It is important to encourage both individuals whose scores are below the normal range and individuals with normal scores but who still have concerns to have a follow-up consultation with a qualified healthcare professional.

What should a person’s “next steps” be if the screening score raises concern?

Strongly encourage an individual to pursue a complete medical examination with a qualified healthcare professional. With the permission of the person who was screened, suggest to accompanying family members that they make sure that he or she pursues further evaluation. Provide each participant with a completed copy of the “Participant Departure Packet.”

What causes memory impairment?

A number of problems can cause memory impairment. Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiency or thyroid problems. Other memory problems might result from causes that currently are not reversible, but may possibly be slowed.
